Say Hello to the Next Organic Urban Farmer in Santurce
I have a big and beautiful dream of becoming an organic urban farmer. I have been thinking about this for a long time. It is a difficult goal and will take me a long time to accomplish. First, I am a very busy person. I have three children, a husband, a dog, a cat, and a two homeless people that I feed everyday. I also work as a full time professor, and as a teaching consultant. I also write and edit, and help people develop health, education and social programs. Secondly, I do not know much about growing food in the tropics. I grew vegeatbles in New Jersey, but it is very different the tropics. You need to grow different crops, and know when to grow them. Third, I do not have much money right now to buy seeds, plants, soil, fertilizer, and other equipment.
Even though I cannot accomplish this goal right away, I stay focused on it in many ways. First, I read as much as I can organic farming in the tropics. I go to websites that talks about ways to grow specific plants and methods to use. I talk to others to identify people who are growing organically in Puerto Rico. I also visit organic markets and talk to growers to learn more about what works. One day when I have the time and money I plan on taking a course on organic farming or making an organic huerto casero.
